Building Excellence: How Romania is Elevating Economics Education through the IEO

Romania's Experience
Alexandra Dache, PhD in Economic Statistics and veteran educator with over 20 years of experience, serves as Romania’s National Coordinator for the International Economics Olympiad (IEO). In her capacity, she has built a robust, inclusive, and impactful ecosystem for training high school students in economics, business, and financial literacy. In this interview, she shares the evolution of her initiative, its core values, and actionable insights for replicating its success.

From One Student’s Dream to a National Movement
The Romanian journey to IEO started not with a government directive or institutional mandate, but with a single student.
It was a student who ranked first in the National Economics Olympiad that reached out to me. She wanted to participate in the IEO, and that sparked the beginning of a movement.
Rather than turning it into a one-off experience, Alexandra saw a larger opportunity: to establish a legitimate, inclusive, and transparent selection process for Romanian students to compete internationally. Today, her initiative engages over 300 students from 47 schools, supported by a dynamic network of 26 economics teachers.
Best Practices in Student Selection and Training
Structured and Transparent Selection

Alexandra designed a three-tiered national selection process:
  1. Multiple Choice Stage: Administered at the school level.
  2. Essay Evaluation: Organized regionally by trusted teacher networks to ensure integrity.
  3. Boot Camp: A rigorous three-day training and final evaluation covering economics, business, and financial literacy.
Essays are anonymized and double-marked by teachers. It ensures fairness and trust in the process.
Deep Institutional Collaborations

Partnerships have been essential. Key collaborators include:
  • ASE Bucharest – provides academic support.
  • Bucharest Stock Exchange – hosts workshops and financial literacy sessions.
  • EY Romania – contributes tailored training materials.
  • BCR Bank – supports the business case challenge and has sponsored the team’s participation.
We don’t monetize this. Our credibility comes from transparency and genuine commitment.
Grassroots Teacher Network: The Core Engine
Alexandra refers to her collaborators as “senior partners in education”, emphasizing their significant role in co-creating educational projects.
We’ve built a team of eight core contributors and many more who step in when needed. Each brings a unique strength — some are tech-savvy, others are curriculum experts.
She emphasizes inclusivity, building trust through online meetings, collaborative calendars, and responsiveness to teachers’ feedback. The national teacher network now spans both urban and rural schools, public and private.
Scaling Sustainably: With Passion, Not Profit
While some organizations chase funding, Dache has resisted monetizing the program:
We remain a passion project. When money enters too early, the dynamics change. Right now, our commitment and integrity are our currency.
This philosophy has earned her partners’ trust—and their ongoing support. It has also helped retain focus on equity and quality rather than financial growth.
Alumni Involvement and Lifelong Impact
Perhaps the most touching element of Dache’s work is the ongoing bond with alumni.
They come back. They coach, they inspire, and some even return to Romania to work at the very firms that once hosted them.
Plans are in motion to formalize alumni engagement through structured volunteering, mentoring, and potentially corporate sponsorships via former students now in professional roles.
Recommendations for Aspiring Organizers
Alexandra’s final advice for anyone trying to build a national competition from scratch is simple:
Find your people. One person cannot do everything. Reach out, collaborate, create a community.
She also stresses the importance of authenticity, transparency, and consistency.
If it’s just one competition a year, it won’t work. You need ongoing engagement — economics lessons, initiatives, enrichment days. Make it part of students’ lives.
Looking Ahead
Alexandra Dache is currently working to integrate the competition into Romania’s national education calendar and deepen alumni involvement. Her long-term vision is to institutionalize excellence without compromising the values of passion, openness, and community.
