Steps to join
Major deadlines
To send a national team to the IEO, an organization (ministry, educational organization, university, etc.) has to officially apply for participation in the IEO and hold a national competition to select up to 5 contestants. The selection can be created from scratch or be based on some existing contest. The organization whose application is approved by the Executive Board becomes the official representative of the nation at the Olympiad.

Based on our experience, Economics is rarely studied as a separate subject in schools. However, students from all over the world can still study it through other sources such as vocational centers' programs, online courses, or books. These students are still eligible to join the IEO.
One of the primary goals of the IEO is to spread economic knowledge among youth. We invite you to join us in this mission.

At the IEO, only national delegations that are formed through the national selection can participate. If your school organizes such a selection which will be open to all students of your country, there is a chance that some of your students will win; however, the team will still be formed by the best performing students from a variety of schools.
If you want to compete as a school team, you can join our seasonal contest IEOx WinterChallenge: it takes place in February and is open to everyone.

Each national delegation can have up to five contestants and two team leaders. There can be fewer contestants, however, it will make it harder for the team to prepare the business case solution.
Only high school students and graduates of the year of the IEO can join the competition, e.g. if a student has just graduated from school and got enrolled to a university but has not started classes yet and will still be on a summer break during the IEO, he/she can join the competition).
The upper border of 20 y.o. is suggested for the countries where school education starts later and/or takes more years to complete. The average age of IEO contestants is 16-17 y.o.

International students who attend schools in a participating country and possess student visas or similar resident permits can participate in the IEO as part of the officially selected team representing said country.
Not necessarily. You may choose a single discipline (Economics, Finance, or Business) or any combination of them for your national selection.
According to our Statute, you are free to choose any format of the competition making sure that it meets our minimum requirements. We do provide informational assistance: we share our experience of organizing both on-site and online contests and, more substantially, provide our Financial Literacy Game for the selection for free. The FLG is completely web-based and can be used as a ready-made tool to evaluate contestants’ financial literacy.
We do not provide tasks in Economics nor share ideas for Business Cases: these tasks are developed by the national organizers.

There are no participation fees: any national delegation can join for free once their application meets the requirements. The national organizer covers the travelling costs, accommodation and meals for 5 contestants and 1-2 team leaders if the on-site format of participation is chosen.
